He did it, he did it, he did it, he did it!
We did it!
Obama won the election!
I think I was too freaked out tonight -- I actually fell asleep hours ago. TD woke me up when it was decided. As the sleep wore off, as we watched MSNBC and watched Eugene Robinson start to cry and Rachel Maddow start to cry, as we saw people break down at various places the cameras were, as we saw Jesse Jackson's wet eyes... It is as though all the tension so many people have been feeling has been released.
What's so interesting is that people finally feel as though they can talk about race again. Robinson, in addition to talking tenderly about his passed MIL and FIL, talked about the 400 years people of color have endured. And somehow that made it possible for the other commentators to suddenly admit, out loud, what a big deal this election was, and how this country will not be the same after this. We are not saved, we are not fixed, but tomorrow will absolutely be a better day.
Finally, as I'm listening to McCain's concession speech and he's having to shut down his supporters who are nastily booing, I hope he realizes that this is why he lost. McCain decided to run a campaign that capitalized on fear, that brought out the worst in people, and this time we showed him and his campaign that the majority of Americans were not going to vote clouded by fear, but clearly and with hope. I am glad to hear McCain be the classy guy that I thought was underneath the defensive, angry mien at least today in this concession speech, but too little too late.
He did it.
We did it.
Peace out. We have a new leader!
